In Plain Sight

ht3Victims of human trafficking are not always easy to identify. It is very possible you may have seen one cleaning tables in a restaurant, on a subway, or at a stop light. This is an issue that doesn’t get as much media attention as other topics, but human trafficking involves 800,000 victims worldwide each year. This includes many victims here in the United States, most are women and children.

Trafficking generates a profit of 32 billion dollars each year and is defined by an exploitation which comes in many forms. Only 19% of all trafficking involves labor exploitation. The most common form of exploitation is sexual.

According to the U S State Department, 80% of all trafficking involves sexual exploitation. This includes forcing victims into prostitution, sexual slavery, and forcing victims to commit sex acts to create pornography. Over 70% of trafficking victims in the United States are women and half are children.

In the United States the average teen will enter the sex trade industry between the ages of 12 to 14 years old. Many of these victims are runaway girls who have fled from sexual abuse. According to UNICEF the United States is considered a top destination for victims of child trafficking and exploitation. Cases of human trafficking have been reported in all 50 U.S. States; anyone can be trafficked regardless of race, class, education, gender, age, or citizenship when forcefully coerced or enticed by false promises.

There are ways to identify a trafficking victim. If you encounter a child or adult that is not sure of their whereabouts, exhibits fear or anxious behavior, or has inconsistencies in their story, these are conditions consistent with a trafficking victim. This person may also have unexplained injuries. If you suspect someone is a victim of trafficking, call the National Human Trafficking Hotline 1-888-373-7888

Improve Your Sex Appeal and Help the Planet

According to the website, “60 million Americans bicycle at least once per year”. Cycling is already a form of recreation for a lot of Americans. But if we could incorporate bicycles as an alternative form of transportation; the results could have, to put mildly, incredible benefits beyond the realm comprehension.

Karl Drais invented bicycles in 1817, calling them the “laufmaschine” or “running machine” in German. According to an article published in the Washington Post entitled The History of the Bicycle, because most people of this era traveled on foot or by horse, the bicycle was a revolutionary invention.

A significant number of Americans have a bike. Mine was used as a clothes hanger until a couple of years ago. As I have learned, things are going to start changing the more you get on that bike. Let’s start with the environment, those benefits are pretty obvious. You don’t put gas in a bike; no other fossil fuels used either. This could result in less mining for fossil fuels and the environmental tool that takes. We’re all going to breathe better because you have helped to clean the air, and every little bit helps. If more do the same, we could improve air quality and help to reduce our carbon foot print. Our planet would appreciate that, it might help it last longer.

As an American; you are taking a stand to help reduce the United States’ dependency on foreign Oil, which has become somewhat of an addiction. What? You don’t think so? How much did it cost the last time you were at a Gas Station? Are you willing to pay more? Hate to say it but you’re not going to have a choice.

Here is something to contemplate; The United States of America purchases a lot of oil from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). There are nations who are members of OPEC who do not like The United States of America, who we are, or what we stand for. There’s a very good chance the money you pay at that gas pump; some of it goes to them. Is our addiction for Oil an increasing threat to national security? Are we as Americans doing everything we can to recognize if it is an issue and do something about it?

We have focused on how cycling can benefit the environment and America on the World Stage; now let’s move on to a fact so many people have overlooked; regardless of your sex or maybe even age, the more you use a bike, the more you increase your sex appeal.

When you get on a bike you’re using your legs, the largest muscle group of your body. You’re getting a lot more from exercising because you’re using the biggest muscles. You’re increasing your heart rate, which also increases your metabolism. Funny thing about the Human Metabolism; when it’s increased and remains elevated because of exercise, it burns fat. Oh but wait, that’s not all; you keep it up and the exercise will start building muscle tone all over. Any of those, well, flabby areas, will start to magically disappear. Those jeans, oh yeah, they’ll fit a lot better.

In addition, you’re body will also start to increase production of endorphins that help you to feel and look better. This may also help you to effectively deal with stress have more confidence. Think of the possibilities! Now, don’t believe a single word you’re just read in the last two paragraphs; go ask a doctor.

If the environment, national security, and sex appeal weren’t enough to sell you on using your bike more, got one more thing; the less you have to spend at a gas station, the more money you’ll have to spend here at home. Think about it.
